Agility Agility is designed to demonstrate a dog's willingness to work with its handler in a variety of situations. It is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training and teamwork. Dog and handlers negotiate an obstacle course racing against the clock.
Agility is split into 3 class types, Standard, Jumpers & Weaves, & F.A.S.T. Standard - Includes contact objects such as the dog walk, the A-frame, and seesaw. Each of the contact obstacles has a "safety zone" painted on the object and the dog must place at least one paw in that area to complete the obstacle. Jumpers & Weaves - It has only jumps, tunnels and weave poles with no contact objects to slow the pace. And finally, F.A.S.T. - Which stands for Fifteen And Send Time. This class is designed to test handler and dog teams' strategy, skill, accuracy, speed, and distance handling. All classes have varying levels of difficulty so there is a level and class for everyone and their dog. From the beginner handler and untried dog, to a seasoned Agility Trial Handler and conditioned dog. Current & Past Agility ChampionsObedience When you hear the word "obedience" the first thing that jumps to mind is what we all have taught our dogs. Things like Sit, lay down, and heel. And the competitive arena built to test your dogs training and focus also called Obedience. Well at the SKC, Obedience is not limited to just this Test. They also allocate many sports to this area depending on their system and make up.
Sports such as Herding, Field Trials, Tracking, French Ring, & Schutzhund are considered Obedience Shows. So there is an obedience arena for all dogs. Herding tests a dogs ability to perform ranch life jobs and test it's obedience, focus, and bond between handler and dog. Dogs that excel at this naturally are dogs of the herding group, but most dogs can be taught to do some of the basics in this arena as well. one unknown natural herder is the rottweiler for instance. Field Trials test a dogs ability to listen to a handlers cues & to retriever, flush, or catch game. Dogs that excel at this naturally are sporting, and some working breeds. Tracking is a good way to test you and your dogs bond and obedience through what comes naturally to almost all dogs, Smell. Dogs that excel at this are dogs known for tracking like herding, working & sporting breeds, but almost all dogs can do this. & Finally, French Ring & Schutzhund. These two sports, though classed differently, test for the same thing. How well your dog is trained, Conditioned, the bond between Owner/handler and dog and it's ability to protect. Dogs that generally excel at this are German Shepherds, Belgian Mailinois, and many other breeds including working and terriers. Current & Past Obedience ChampionsCanine sports Canine Sports is basically a catagory that collects all the other sports that are not catagorized as Agility or Obedience sports. Some of the sports this includes are Weight Pulling, Lure Coursing, Racing, Flyball and other spectator sports. All these sports still test a dogs obedience, conditioning, and bond between handler and dog.
